DSP Engineering
I design and implement the real-time digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms behind audio effects and hardware. If you need an effect algorithm designed, ported to embedded hardware, or refined for sound quality, this is where I come in.
Algorithms for inspiring audio
-
Circuit analysis & emulation
Reverse engineering and analysing classic analog hardware to build accurate digital models, capturing the character of the original circuits.
-
Algorithm design
Algorithmic reverbs, delays, chorus/vibrato, flanger, saturation, compression, granular, and more, whether modelled on analog behaviour or something entirely new.
-
DAW plugins
Building a VST/AU plugin prototype of an effect with the same algorithms before committing to hardware, so the sound can be validated and refined early.
-
Embedded DSP implementation
Porting and optimising algorithms to run in real time on industry-standard embedded hardware like the STM32H7, FV-1, or SHARC.
-
Advanced processing
Complex DSP systems beyond single-effect devices, including active noise cancellation (ANC), microphone-array beamforming, and surround/spatial audio processing.
How it's built
- Signal flow and block diagrams — mapping out the overall audio path and breaking it into functional blocks
- Algorithm design — building the DSP for each block
- DSP library — built on my personal library of proven building blocks, including delay lines, filters, oscillators, dynamics processors, FDNs, sample-rate converters, pitch detection, and more
- Plugin prototype — validating the sound in software quickly, before committing to hardware
- Port to real-time embedded hardware — optimised for the target platform, with firmware and control features such as tap tempo, MIDI, and presets
Case studies
Fiberdyne — Automotive audio
I developed audio processing algorithms and implemented them on DSP hardware for automotive OEMs and mObridge DSP amplifiers — including active noise cancellation (ANC), microphone-array beamforming, surround-sound processing, EQ, and filtering.
Stekla Engineering — Audio effect plugins
Alongside client work, I'm currently developing a range of VST/AU plugins for studio musicians and sound designers. The first release is an experimental reverb inspired by early digital hardware and is currently in private beta. I've built up an extensive C++ library of DSP building blocks and audio effects including reverb algorithms, delays, pitch shifters, compressors, and bit-depth and sample-rate conversion. Each block is written to be portable, so the same library can run in a JUCE plugin on desktop or on embedded DSP hardware like the STM32.
Why work with me on audio DSP
